The Golden RatioThe Golden Ratio (or Golden Section) and the Golden or Fibonacci Scale are to found in an ever-expanding list of natural phenomena and have been a basic component of my work years before I plunged into Islamic patterns. There are several ways of formulating these special proportions (see the demos) but the growth pattern remains essentially the same. I have become convinced that these proportions and scales are a fundamental characteristic of nature's way of doing things. They were known to the architects of the pyramids in ancient Egypt, served the designers of temples in Classical Greece (the Parthenon was based on the Root 5 and Golden Rectangle), was known to the Islamic pattern makers of the Middle Ages (who apparently knew more than they have been given credit for), was rediscovered in the Italian Renaissance and is to be found in Fractal Theory that has demolished the concept of chaos. |
